The increased contact area between the handle and thehammer head causes the handle to have a tighter fit when the head is seated on the handle. By increasing the end-taper of the handle the hammerhead cannot come off the end of the handle. No slits in the top of the handle minimizes the effect of Humidity/Climate (expansion & contraction) on the handle.
